County workers move board to reduce some cuts

Union shifts focus to ensure impacted workers land jobs

Jan. 25, 2011 – More than 100 Santa Clara County workers came to the Jan. 25 board meeting to engage in an open dialogue with the Board of Supervisors about impacts that will likely occur if budget cuts are authorized. 107 job cuts were scheduled to be authorized Tuesday after the County failed to meet budget reduction targets back in December 2010.

At the Board meeting, SEIU 521 county workers called on the supervisors to look at nearly $7.9 million in budget solutions and open up the budget process to include more collaboration with line staff. Our efforts to protect services won the attention of major local news outlets that include KQED radio, ABC 7, and KRON 4.

In the end, we saved two filled positions at Public Guardian in Social Services, but this victory also came with the board’s approval of the majority of service cuts. SEIU 521 member leaders will now focus on ensuring all affected workers land jobs. The layoff committee will meet with the county about in placing and transferring impacted workers on January 31. February 8 is when the Board will take their second vote to finalize the budget cuts.
