Member leader saves jobs in Fresno

Hard work by SEIU 521 Shop Steward Rene Torres saved Fresno County jobs!

Feb. 14, 2011 – Torres talked to all five members of the Fresno County Board of Supervisors in the week before the board voted on Feb. 8 whether to privatize Fresno County Security.

Because Fresno County voters require the board have four votes before privatizing, the 3-2 vote was not enough to cut county jobs.

After the vote, the county supervisors decided to toss out two other proposals, which would have privatized the Public Defender and Janitorial departments.

One of the two votes to save county jobs came from Supervisor Susan Anderson, who will not run for re-election next year. This vote shows why SEIU members must work hard to make sure her replacement is someone who understands the value of public servants.

“The Union and Stewards working together can and does make a difference in the lives of our members.”
