May 18, 2011 – Tuesday was the first day of budget workshops in Santa Clara County and the board chamber overflowed. Workers and residents, calling for protection of public services, lined up to speak out against budget cuts that would devastate the community.

Said Ruben Garcia, SEIU 521 chapter leader and Eligibility Worker: “I know times are tough and we face a big county budget deficit and cuts need to be made. But I absolutely do not believe that our county, in the heart of Silicon Valley, has no option other than to tell our neediest families that they are on their own.”
