When I was a kid, I loved summer break. I’d still like to have three months off. But for struggling families, summer is the three months of the year when they don’t get free school lunches for their kids. And these days, there are more struggling families than ever.
That’s why the members of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 521, the union that includes workers for Kern County and Bakersfield, just held a food drive to help our food bank stock up. We collected almost 900 pounds of food, plus more than $1,200 in cash donations, for the Community Action Partnership of Kern’s food bank. That was just part of a ton and a half of food collected by our brothers and sisters across our territory.
Now that school is out, I hope Kern County residents will remember that the need for food isn’t just around Thanksgiving and Christmas. Please consider helping our neighbors by donating to our local food banks.
