Our message to Congress: Where are the jobs?

Join the action August 22, 23, 25 & 29

SEIU 521 members this month are standing with other community organizations to demand that Congress stop playing politics and start creating jobs. A series of actions directed at lawmakers across the nation are scheduled during August, when Congress takes its recess. We’ll visit Congressional representatives and tell them to develop jobs instead of focusing solely on deficit reduction.

“We need to reach out to our Congressional representatives and demand they focus on job creation and protecting the jobs that Americans already have. America doesn’t need a divided House! We need jobs, jobs, jobs.”
— Greg Gomez Region 5 Vice President

Protect our public libraries

There is a bill [AB 438] making its way through Sacramento that would make private companies more accountable to taxpayers if companies want to privatize our public libraries.

Read what  Molly Spore-Alhadef, Redwood City Public Librarian, wrote in an Opinion piece published this week: “As a librarian for more than four decades, I’ve never seen so many people count on the library as a place to improve their lives and, through online courses, their job skills. Our proudest days on the job have been when patrons come back to the library after we’ve helped them learn computer skills or find information online, saying: ‘I’ve got the job!'”

Help set the course to rebuild our middle class!

For the upcoming convention to be held at the 521 San Jose union office, October 7-9, we need delegates who:
– Are creative thinkers who want to help build our union
– Like to have fun and get to know other member leaders
– Are not afraid to tackle big picture issues, like fighting for a fair economy that works for all middle class families — not just for big corporations and CEOs.

Is this you? Then you should attend the SEIU Local 521 Biennial Convention as a delegate!

The local’s nomination and election period for delegates officially closes at 5 p.m. Aug. 31. However, please check with your Chapter Leadership and/or Internal Organizer for your Chapter’s specific nomination/election dates and deadlines (which will fall within the local’s time period).

Monterey County members save jobs, $4.7 million in resources

Monterey County members

Monterey County members helped save the grand majority of SEIU jobs that were slated for layoffs during contract negotiations — and are helping to save an additional $4.7 million in County resources.

“Contract negotiations were a real battle, but with the support of the members, and with the grit and determination of my peer negotiators we negotiated a deal that minimized the layoffs and has sparked the centralization of HR.”
