Social Security, Medicare under attack

A bipartisan “Super Committee” in Congress is drafting a plan to slash the national debt and is targeting Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid.

That’s why our SEIU 521 Retirees Chapter partnered with the California Alliance for Retired Americans and other agencies this month. Together the groups held a panel discussion early November and identified actions we can take right now to protect these benefits for seniors and people with disabilities.

“We need to arm ourselves with information and do our best to let our legislators know our concerns about the impacts that cuts would have on seniors, disabled, and low-income families,” said Carol Garvey, Chair of SEIU 521 Retirees Chapter. “It’s time to strengthen, not cut, Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid.”

Take action:

Call Senator Dianne Feinstein (415) 393-0707

Call your Member of Congress (877) 762-8762

Tell them: Social Security belongs to the people who have worked hard all their lives and contributed to it. Social Security does not belong to members of Congress to be used as a piggybank. Medicare or Medicaid should not be used to balance the budget, either. These programs are used by millions of seniors, people with disabilities, and families. Slashing these programs while continuing tax breaks for the wealthy and large corporations is unacceptable. Hands off Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid.
