COPE honors SEIU 521 leaders

The South Bay AFL-CIO Labor Council on Saturday held its annual COPE Awards Dinner. This year’s theme was “Strength in Unity: Steel Magnolias.”

Kristy Sermersheim, SEIU Local 521 Chief Elected Officer, and Luisa Blue, Chief of Staff, were among six honorees chosen for their outstanding contributions to the social and political advancement of women.

“Kristy is just a larger than life, dedicated leader not only for women workers, but all workers,” said Cindy Chavez, South Bay Labor Council Executive Officer. “We were thrilled to honor her for ‘Service Above Self’ because she has shown over and over how passionate she is about workers’ rights and trying to make this world a better place.”

“Honoring Luisa Blue was so important to us because she is multi-faceted in her leadership from her work with AIDS patients at the start of the AIDS crisis, to her continued leadership to make sure Asian Pacific Americans are not left out of the process of winning their rights in the workplace,” said Cindy Chavez.
