“I’ll probably work until I die”

Here’s one worker’s story of why we support SB1234, retirement security for all

California child care providers like me have been working for years without raises, medical insurance, retirement benefits or even sick days to help our families achieve the American Dream.  We love supporting working families by taking good care of their kids, but something about our jobs breaks our hearts.

We probably will not enjoy the part of the American Dream that says if you work hard and play by the rules, you can take care of your family and expect to retire with dignity.  I don’t see myself retiring anytime soon and I’m probably going to work until 70, if not until I die. But it doesn’t have to be this way.

The California Secure Choice Retirement Savings Plan offers Californians with no retirement savings plan at work a way to prepare for their retirement.  SB1234, the bill to create this plan, is up for a vote in the California State Assembly at the end of this month.

Support hardworking Californians. Tell the California State Legislature to pass SB 1234, the California Secure Retirement Savings Plan.

While Secure Choice seems like a simple solution to poverty in retirement, some members of the Assembly and Senate aren’t convinced. They think that workers should just figure it out on their own. And Wall Street executives and the insurance industry are lobbying furiously to defeat this bill.

Our legislators need to hear from people like you. Working until I die or retiring in poverty may be my default retirement plan if SB 1234 doesn’t pass in the California State Legislature.  Stand with me and millions of other Californians who lack workplace retirement plans; we all deserve a fair chance to save for retirement.

In Unity,

Amparo Moreno
California Childcare Provider
