Members at KMC complete successful food drive

On Dec. 19, members at Kern Medical Center walked through the halls of their workplace collecting overflowing boxes of canned and dried food to donate to The Golden Empire Gleaners. The Gleaners are a charitable organization founded in 1985 that collects and distributes food from local organizations, farms and individuals. Last year, they served over 200,000 people by distributing 2 million pounds of food.

The boxes had been placed weeks earlier by SEIU member-leaders who are very supportive of the Golden Empire Gleaners and wanted to find a way to give a something back this holiday season. Our food drive netted hundreds of pounds of food that are going to some of the neediest members of our community. In addition to canned food, we also collected money and pledge cards so people could sign up to volunteer with the Golden Empire Gleaners year round. Our members already donate time and money to noble causes through their schools, churches, and other social organizations. We’re excited to put a purple bow on one of things our members do every day.

“This is the true spirit of the holidays. We should all be giving more back to the communities we live in.” Dariala Losa, Patient Access Services
