Fresno County officials say about 1,500 employees are participating in the first day of a three-day union walkout.
The Fresno Bee reports ( http://bit.ly/zMHmEy) that hundreds of county employees did not work Monday to protest pay cuts. The Service Employee International Union represents about two-thirds of the county workforce, or 4,100 employees.
Union worker pay was slashed 9 percent or more last month because of budget woes.
Monday, half of Fresno County’s 34 library branches shut due to the walkout, and county officials brought on replacements for the 90 percent of correctional officers at Juvenile Hall participating in the walkout.
County officials say core services were not impacted. All correctional officers reported for duty at the jail and most programs, from food stamps to tax collection, continued to operate.
