SEIU Local 521 Home Care members have joined with providers statewide to resolve the lawsuit that we filed against the state to stop cuts to In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS).
This agreement means:
- The state’s maximum share in IHSS wages will increase back to $11.50.
- IHSS hours will no longer be reduced or eliminated based on functional index scores.
- The permanent 20% cuts to all IHSS hours will be replaced by a much smaller, temporary cut that we will fight to eliminate completely in the next two years.
“It was in our best interest to settle the lawsuit; anytime you go to court you take a risk and there was a chance the government would have been allowed to keep the 20% cut, which would have been devastating,” said Yong Soung, IHSS Chapter President, SEIU Local 521.
The agreement includes extending the 3.6% cuts that we currently have and in July of 2013 to accept an additional 4.4% cut (8% total) that will drop to 3.4% (7% total) in July 2014.
We are working on legislation that will help bring in more money into the state so that we can reduce the cuts to zero in the future.
