SEIU International President Mary Kay Henry leads installation ceremony
The newly elected SEIU Local 521 Executive Board was installed March 2 – with SEIU President Mary Kay Henry leading the member leaders through their oath of office.
The two-day working retreat, held at Wonder Valley in Sanger, Calif., was an opportunity for delegates, trustees and officers to learn about their role in the union, review the Local’s budget, and become familiar with the high-priority campaigns of 2013, including immigration reform, affordable healthcare for all, and raising working families’ living standards through organizing.
“As I listen to my brothers and sisters, I feel very empowered,” said Alysia Bonner, Vice President for Region 4, which covers the Fresno and Madera area of 521.
Mary Kay Henry praised SEIU 521 as the standard-bearer Local within SEIU and reminded the members: “Unless we lift the wages of private workers, we won’t get rid of the target on the back of public workers.”
“The most important voice the public needs to hear is from every single one of you. Your voice is what is going to help us turn the tide; telling your story, what we do every day, who we serve, and why it matters.”
Members vowed to work together and support Luisa Blue, the new Chief Elected Officer leading SEIU 521 over the next three years as we continue our mission to improve contracts, strengthen public services, pass comprehensive immigration reform, and win for all working families.
Wrapping up the work on Sunday, Luisa led a familiar and energizing chant: “Are we ready to fight?” she hollered; the audience shouted back: “Yes, we are!”
