On May 8-9, nearly 150 California nurses joined together in Sacramento for the Nurse Alliance of California’s 2013 Legislative Conference. The conference began with Luisa Blue, RN and President of SEIU Local 521, asking nurses to become leaders in the implementation of the Affordable Care Act because the public trusts and respects nurses. Nurses learned more about expanding Medi-Cal (Medicaid), reaching out to the uninsured and plans to protect California’s safety net hospitals. The next day, nurses took what they learned to the state capitol to lobby on legislation that impacts nurses and patients. Luisa Blue remarked, “Nursing is a political thing, we have to get used to that–because it’s politics that controls healthcare in this country.”

During the conference, the Glenda Canfield Award for achievement was given to Carmen Morales-Board, RN, NP and member of SEIU Local 521 for her team-based effort to educate nurse colleagues and patients about the benefits of the healthcare law. “I could never have come this far without SEIU,” Carmen said as she accepted the award.
