SEIU Local 521 members in the Monterey Bay area got a visit from International Vice President, Eliseo Medina, on June 2, 2013. Medina was in Salinas to co-host an immigration reform town hall with 20th Congressional District Representative, Sam Farr.
He spoke before the town hall to a packed room of approximately 100 SEIU members and labor supporters from around the bay. Medina spoke of the connection between the fight for immigrants rights and the fight for workers’ rights. He laid out perfectly the reasons that SEIU is taking the lead in the fight to reform our immigration policies and include a path to citizenship.
The group is part of California Table, a state-wide coalition of more than 56 independent organizations, including SEIU Local 521 members; other labor allies; faith-based groups; college students and professors; and immigrant and civil rights groups.
Members began the event with rally in front of the republican headquarters in Bakersfield, then marched to the office of Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-23) and delivered a letter urging him to support comprehensive immigration reform.
The July 9 action was covered by various local TV news stations.
The July 9 action was followed by a rally and press conference tomorrow, July 11 in front of Rep. Kevin McCarthy’s office in Bakersfield to press the member of Congress on immigration reform. The California Table will announce a series of actions to pressure McCarthy and other members of Congress during the next few weeks.
