My Loi, an SEIU 521 member and homecare worker was elected to the National Executive Board of the Asian Pacific American Labor Alliance (APALA) Caucus.
The APALA Caucus helps create a stronger voice for workers within their communities. It is the first and only national organization of Asian/Pacific Island American union members.
APALA continues a tradition dating from the mid-1800’s of workers fighting for justice in the sugar plantations of Hawaii, the factories of Alaska, and the railroad and agricultural camps of the western United States.
My joins other SEIU members who were elected to the APALA Executive Board, including SEIU 521 Chief Elected Officer Luisa Blue and Kim Geron from SEIU California Faculty Association.

My Loi urges all workers to participate in our union. “Get involved so we can learn and grow together. We really can build the community and improve workers’ lives,” she said.
My has been active with the APALA Caucus since 2009 and discovered that it not only empowered her to make positive change for workers, but she also made great friends both locally and around the country. And while that keeps her motivated, she’s also thrilled by being able to help people with limited English-speaking abilities to get more involved in labor.
My said she credits SEIU Local 521 for her success and is grateful for the many opportunities and trainings that SEIU has provided.
With the election of new officers, the SEIU APALA Caucus will continue its important work of ensuring our union’s diverse voices are represented as we advance toward a path of empowerment for all working families.
