More than three thousand Monterey County workers, including essential emergency, safety, health, and social services employees—ratified a new labor contract with Monterey County on September 10. The vote took place between September 4th and 10th. The Board of Supervisors approved the new contract on September 10, 2019.
Thanks to the power of our members, we were able to reach an agreement that protects our healthcare and provides raises that are higher than our previous 2016 contract, with ZERO takeaways. This tentative agreement reflects the power of our union. When we fight, WE WIN!
“This contract prioritizes frontline workers and ensures that Monterey County workers are recognized for the valuable services we provide,” said Alicia Metters, SEIU Local 521 Region 2 Vice President. “We are the workers who help hundreds of thousands of Monterey County residents in need. We are happy to get an agreement that helps us to stay here and serve the community we love.”
Negotiators for Monterey County and the public service workers’ bargaining team came to a tentative agreement on the two-year labor contract on August 28th, avoiding a potential strike, which had been approved by SEIU 521 Monterey County members by 97% on August 21st.

This agreement is a reflection of the hard work and dedication of our bargaining team and all of our members who rallied, spoke at the board of supervisors, petitioned and showed visible support for their union and for a strong contract. This contract prioritizes frontline workers and ensures that Monterey County workers are recognized for the valuable services we provide. This is a powerful contract for working families in Monterey county and we will continue fighting for issues at worksites together.
