Under the leadership of the Board of Supervisors and departing CEO Harry Weis, Natividad Medical Center (NMC) over the past five years has transformed from a struggling safety-net hospital with an uncertain future to one that is regarded as a model for public hospitals where quality care and patient safety come first.
Today, Natividad is well positioned to seize new opportunities and succeed in a post- Affordable Care Act world that has brought more competition to the marketplace. Together, our collaboration has delivered a significant achievement: Designation of Level II Trauma at Natividad Medical Center. Employees have been working with management in the past year to ensure that our Level II Trauma is implemented by January 2015 for the health and well-being of our community.
The proud members of SEIU Local 521 displayed the Power of Unity and what we can accomplish when we Stand Together. On July 28, 2014, an overwhelming number of SEIU Local 521 members, physician leaders, RN’s and community allies stood up to fight a proposal to pay a San Francisco consulting firm hundreds of thousands of our tax dollars to take over leadership of NMC.
We urged the Board of Supervisors to preserve the mission and values of Natividad Medical Center by appointing NMC Board of Trustee Dr. Kelly O’Keefe as interim CEO while a search for a permanent CEO is underway. We have full confidence in Dr. O’Keefe and believe his 30 years of medical expertise will help guide the successful implementation of our Level II Trauma facility.
Thanks to the raised voices of the courageous members the proposal has been withdrawn and the Hospital will have local leadership. The NMC Board of trustee leader Dr. Kelly O’Keefe has been appointed as the interim CEO and Dr. Gary Gray will remain as Chief Medical Officer. When we stand united we win.
