Nearly a hundred delegates across SEIU Local 521’s vast region convened in San Jose on Friday, Aug. 1, kicking off a 3-day convention to assess the state of our Union and chart its future.

SEIU Local 521 President Gwyn Harshaw and Chief Elected Officer Luisa Blue opened the evening program to frame the work awaiting the delegates over the weekend, operating under the theme, “A Leader of Unions, a Union of Leaders.”
She talked about her journey at our sister Local and how they have implemented huge changes and how those changes are helping them to build a stronger future. She talked about her early failures at developing leadership at Local 1000 and what she went through to become a better leader. She ended by saying, “Leaders don’t create followers; leaders create more leaders.”
The evening program concluded with a movie about the work of Child Care Providers and the struggles they go though as they provide quality childcare services for our communities. This is an area that SEIU Local 521 has been working on for years and we’re ready to continue the fight.
