SEIU 521 members gathered at the union hall to ask tough questions of Bakersfield City Council candidates on Sept. 9. There were four candidates who participated in the process and each of them did very well during the process. The evening began with introductions followed by questions from SEIU members. After the candidates answered every question and gave a closing statement, they were released and we discussed and voted on our support for each of them. Ultimately, the members who were present voted to recommend endorsing three of the candidates.
Herman Williams from Kern Medical Center said, “It was a good process. This was the first time I’ve ever been involved and I would definitely come to another one. Every candidate talks about the fire department, the police department and emergency services. Those are all really important, but we need them to talk about blue collar workers too. Some of the questions tonight got them to talk about that.”
