San Benito County Bargaining Update

Bargaining Update – July 28

San Benito LogoYesterday, the county presented us with important information about the future of our healthcare options. Please read on because WE MUST ACT AS EARLY AS NEXT WEEK to ensure access to affordable healthcare options for all current employees and current and future retirees of San Benito County.

In 2016, the cost of our premiums for PERS Choice and PERS Select health plans will nearly DOUBLE. This means most of us will have to pay twice as much out-of-pocket every month for the same PERS Choice and PERS Select plans we have now. Both of these health plans are provided by CalPERS healthcare system under their contract with San Benito County.

At the meeting, the county brought healthcare brokers (Keenan Associates and Alliant) to offer alternative healthcare plans to compete against the increasing CalPERS plans. See the summary provided by Keenan Associates of proposed healthcare plan design and benefits: http://521.seiu.org/sbcohealthcare/keenanproposal

The first big hurdle in our campaign to “Build a Better San Benito” is to ensure we all have access to affordable healthcare. NEXT WEEK, we must decide whether to continue with the CalPERS healthcare system where we will face dramatic cost increases, or migrate to a new healthcare plan design being offered by other healthcare brokers.

How do we decide?

1. Become a member. Online Membership Form: http://www.seiu521.org/membership
2. Get the information. Read the important FAQs flyer here: http://521.seiu.org/sbcohealthcare/faqs
3. Come to a meeting and vote. See below.

Bargaining unit members should be prepared to attend one of the following TENTATIVE one-hour worksite meetings from August 4 to August 6. Ballots will be distributed after the meetings. Members may cast their ballots after the meeting or vote immediately after the last meeting on August 6. This will be on paid work time by the county.
