The Children Over Politics (COP) groups in Fresno and Bakersfield met for the first time on August 29, 2015 and had a chance to speak with the founders of Children Over Politics, Yamilex Rustrian and Belle Lopez.
The youth learned the history of Children Over Politics after watching a video of Children Over Politics first action, a 5 day fast in Los Angeles (Click here to watch the video).
After hearing about Children Over Politics directly from the founders, the youth participated in an immigration history and timeline activity that allowed them to trace back where they felt their family and personal history began.
The next discussion focused on defining what the four pillars of COP are from their personal perspective.
Lastly, the youth got to share what are issues they care about and could potentially work on.
Next Meeting: Saturday, September 26 from 10 a.m.- 12:30 p.m. in our Fresno and Bakersfield Offices.
Do you have a child who could learn and be passionate about something meaningful? Maybe you know a young person who would benefit from volunteering? If so, we are looking for the future of the labor movement between the ages of 15-25 to engage in our new youth advocacy group called Children Over Politics.
Children Over Politics is about developing our next generation of activists fighting for civic engagement, economic equality, racial justice, and immigration reform. Participants will think critically and engage in dialogue about the struggles of working families and other pressing national and local issues. Most of all, they will learn by taking action.
Encourage a young person in your life to become involved by attending our next Children Over Politics meeting in Fresno or Bakersfield.
