Over the past year, Children Over Politics organized and participated in many activities that demonstrated a commitment fighting for racial justice, immigration justice, civic participation, and income inequality. To wrap up the year, Children Over Politics hosted their very first “Runway Role Model” event to celebrate leaders who have mentored, supported, and inspired millennial activists and organizers. Two of our SEIU Local 521 youth, Gloria and Ayanna, attended the celebration as the newest members of Children Over Politics. They have shown gr
eat leadership and expanded Children Over Politics into the Fresno and Bakersfield regions.
At the celebration, each youth member of Children Over Politics walked on the runway alongside a leader who has inspired them to better our society. A diverse group, including State of CA Labor Commissioner Julie Su, SEIU California Executive Director Jon Youngdahl, and Local 521’s own Luisa Blue, was honored as 2015 Children Over Politics Role models for their commitment to developing young leaders.. Luisa was accompanied by our Visalia youth organizer Gloria as they strutted down the runway to the song “Girl on Fire” by Alicia Keys. The event was heavily attended by activists between the ages of 14 and 25, labor leaders, and community partners showing that we have a bright future and a powerful young generation of activists and organizers.
“Gloria and Ayanna’s families are very proud of them and I was honored to have them represent Local 521. These young women always step up when there is union work to do. They are bright, driven and focused on bringing stronger youth engagement to our local and the broader SEIU campaigns for comprehensive immigration reform, the Fight for $15 and a Union campaign, and our campaigns for racial and economic justice. This is only the start.”
