Our Better Valley Health Summit gave members an opportunity to connect and discuss our future in the Central Valley. With environmental stresses like poor air quality and possible insurance cost increases, members had a lot to discuss.
The event was primarily put together to build membership in the Better Valley Health Coalition. Because of our work in that coalition, we have started to make real change and impact our communities. We have also already managed to delay and possibly stop the possible mid-year rate increases from the San Joaquin Valley Insurance Authority.
Ester Camacho, a self-sufficiency support assistant II, brought her whole family out to the park for the event. “I’m very excited to be out here today and learn about our healthcare. I was at work telling my co-workers to come. Our union does a lot of great things. It’s important to be involved.”
It has been less than one year since the County of Fresno decided to pay at least the state minimum wage to all workers. Not every SEIU member who has this insurance lives in poverty, but there are enough that these increases will make working families have to go without insurance.
We’re fired up for change and ready to put in the work to bring better health and healthcare to working families in the valley. Are you ready to #unitefightwin for better valley health? Start by taking the survey here.
