Monterey County Members Fill Board Chambers

Monterey County Chapter
After members’ successful show-of-force before the Monterey County Board of Supervisors on June 21, the county moved only a little bit and today countered our proposal with a 2% raise in the 3rd year.

The bottom line remains that healthcare concessions from workers will deepen the county’s recruitment and retention crisis and harm employees already struggling.

Tell the Board “NO!” to healthcare concessions.

Next week, our contract expires. And WE, SEIU 521 members, are the only ones that can impress upon the Board that our fight about fairness and accountability.

Monterey County’s Board of Supervisors voted on June 21 to adopt a $1.36 billion dollar budget for the FY 16/17. Lobbying and actions by SEIU members during the budget process resulted in significant wins, including:

  • Reinstatement of SEIU positions in Parks and RMA that were slated for layoffs
  • An alternative financing plan for the ERP upgrade that will save General Fund departments $4 million next year
  • A Board commitment to investigate the vacation cash-out program. Over the last 4 years, management vacation cash-outs have cost the County $7.6 million.

Despite these victories, we must continue fighting to ensure that the Board of Supervisors invests in our workforce.

The county has proposed healthcare concessions at the bargaining table that will deepen its recruitment and retention crisis and harm employees already struggling to afford cost of living.

We are currently negotiating with the county and this afternoon the county countered our Monday proposal by giving us the same proposal except for now a 2% raise in the 3rd year. Go here for a list of previous proposals and tentative agreements (current proposal will be posted shortly): www.seiu521.org/mocobargainingupdates/#proposals

Next week, our contract expires. And YOU, SEIU 521 members, are the only ones that can impress upon the Board as to why our fight is one of fairness and accountability.

Tell the Board of Supervisors how their proposal for concessions hurts you & your family!
