A state appeals court has sided with Tulare County workers and rejected an appeal from the county to not have to pay SEIU 521 members back-pay. The case stems all the way back to 2011 when the county violated our contract and imposed a freeze on promotions and pay increases.
“This is a victory for workers and SEIU members in Tulare County,” said Ryan Wilson, a supervising Child Support Officer and Tulare County Chapter President with SEIU Local 521. “We hope the county will accept this ruling and move on rather than waste more taxpayer dollars on court appeals.”
SEIU members have shown that when workers stand together, we can reverse anti-worker management decisions that violate our contract and hurt working families.
Said Kristy Sermersheim, the union’s Chief Elected Officer: “We are happy that both PERB and the appellate court have agreed that Tulare County violated our agreement and treated workers in bad faith. Our members are committed to serving the Tulare community and their work is indispensable. This is a fair, just and long overdue decision.”

For Tulare County Workers:
Does the County owe you money? Come to the Special General Membership Meeting to find out!
Thursday, August 11th from 6:00-7:30pm
SEIU 521 Visalia Office, 1811 W. Sunnyside Ave.
What is the next step? Do we have to request the money owed to us, or does the county automatically start the back-pay process?
We will send an update, soon. Thanks for your question.
Why hasn’t any information from the Aug 11th meeting been posted online. Not everyone is/was able to attend this one-time meeting.
Hi, we are working on an update and will send the information as soon as we can.
If you were a Tulare County employee, but no longer work there are you entitled to payment as well? Or are they going to get around paying them the money they are owed?
It has been over a month since the post stating SEIU was working on sending out information. Please send out whatever was discussed during last meeting. Thank you.
Do we need to contact the county for the money owed us? Or did county appeal again ?
Can you please provide an update on what is happening with the back pay and what the next step is
Thanks!!
I’ve heard rumor that the county put forth a dollar amount and that the union is still in talks as it didn’t include everything; in particular the money being factored into retirement calculations, etc. Hopefully we hear more soon…
has there been any official statement released on this yet? I know there are some employees that could really use the money especially before the holiday season. Is it the county holding this up or it the union???
Sorry for the disconnect.

Why are these questions not answered as of 11/18/16. Some of us were not able to attend any meetings on this issue. Just received email saying there is a meeting one day before final deadline. Why the last minute rush?
Great job, SEIU, on getting this settlement!
