Bakersfield Fights ACA Repeal

SEIU members stood with their community on a rainy night on Jan. 20 in Bakersfield to #fight4ourhealth. Over 100 people gathered at the Liberty Bell while speakers talked about how the Affordable Care Act (ACA) saved their lives. Service providers talked about the impact a repeal would have on Kern County.

SEIU Local 521 President Gywn Harshaw remembers how people suffered before the ACA became law:

“Our workers connect people to services and deliver services provided by the ACA. Without the law, those services and jobs will go away.”

Francisco Martinez, a Social Services Worker III, talked about how we make an impact:

“The more we do this, the more people are going to realize that healthcare is important to us. There are people who will die without this care.

What’s the best way to get involved? Having health coverage truly does save lives. I have a few family members that would literally die if they didn’t have coverage– good coverage, at that.
