We just concluded our election for the Union’s Chief Elected Officer (CEO) position and I am excited to report that turnout was the highest the Local has ever seen: more than 4,000 members voted!
First, congratulations to our new CEO Riko Mendez, whose campaign slogan was “United We Win!” We know that if we hold true to that motto, we will be able to achieve great things together.
The challenges before us – no one person can tackle alone. Together, we need to build a union with members leading the movement. We need to fight for an economy and democracy that works for working people like us. And we need to strengthen public services, empower workers, and build stronger communities.
I am eager for the work we launched with the Localwide Transformation Committee to continue in 2017. The key to our future success is simple: Engage and grow our membership; develop leaders; and build community and political power.
On behalf of the SEIU 521 Executive Board, I invite every member to step up and find your role in our Union – whether it’s as a Steward, Contract Negotiator, or informal Union Greeter at your worksite. There are also numerous Caucuses and Committees where you can engage: www.seiu521.org/caucuses-committees
Because we lead with transparency and act with accountability – as we demand of our employers – our Union holds Executive Board meetings every quarter and they are open to all members. In addition, there are the Budget and Finance and the Officers’ meetings that are held every month. These serve as forums where members may address elected union leaders directly regarding any questions, concerns, or ideas you may have to improve our Local. You may also email the Executive Board at firstname.lastname@example.org. I hope to see you at the next rally!
