Oprah Winfrey’s newsworthy Golden Globes speech touched on something important that is frequently overlooked in the women’s rights movement: Working women often don’t have the luxury of speaking out against injustice. Speaking out could cost them their job, or the ability to provide for their families.

With a union, working women have power. Union contracts ensure that women receive equal pay for equal work, and belonging to a union allows us to use our collective power to negotiate safe working conditions, free from harassment and assault.
