Thirty-one members of SEIU Local 521 were elected recently to be a delegate to the SEIU International Convention in San Juan, Puerto Rico May 30 through June 4, 2008. Members from more than 35 chapters and all industries voted in the election which was held in 12 locations over a span of 11 days.
Delegates will vote for full-time officers of the International and the Executive Board for our 1.8 million-member Union. One day will be spent working in industry breakouts, such as health care and long-term care, but most members will participate with the Public Services Division, of which Local 521 President Kristy Sermersheim is chair.

Members gathered in Modesto to listen to candidate statements and vote. |
The members will help develop systems, tools and strategies that can make it possible for working people to achieve their dreams, such as quality, affordable healthcare for all; fair and comprehensive immigration reform; an end to predatory lending; the ability to own homes and raise families in safe neighborhoods with good schools; the ability to choose a union free from employer interference; and jobs with fair wages, good benefits, and safe and healthy conditions.
Thanks go to Chair Dan Weidman, Elsa Venegas, Vicki Avila, Matt Nathanson and Nan Blitz for working diligently with the League of Women Voters to monitor and verify votes.
