In a historic election this month, SEIU Local 521 members officially elected our leaders who will guide our Union through 2010 and beyond.
Meet the first newly elected Executive Board (2010-2013)
Member leaders were initially appointed when we became Local 521 in 2006. Since then, members have finalized a new set of
bylaws
and held democratic
elections
.
To ensure a fair process for all, the independent third party American Arbitration Association ran the election.
The final vote was counted on Feb. 19, 2010. Elected leaders will serve three-year terms.
More than 3,000 members voted. Here are the winners of the top 5 officer seats elected localwide:
Chief Elected Officer:
Kristy Sermersheim (1,897 votes – 65.7%)
"I was proud that so many people chose to run in this historical election. With this democratically elected leadership group, I know we'll be stronger together."
President:
Carmen Cruise (1,962 votes – 68.3%)
"The Union is about working for wages, and working conditions, and benefits. The members created a bylaws structure and elected officers, and now it’s up to us to fight for our members."
First Vice President:
Gwyn Harshaw (1,665 votes – 58.5%)
"Now that I've been elected, my first priority is member service. Our work has just begun."
Secretary:
John Gutierrez (1,874 votes – 66%)
"I think we've done really good job of pulling union members together to become a real powerful force. My goal is to promote an openness and communication within the local so that people know and understand issues, know what's going on and support one another."
Treasurer:
RoseAnn Dominguez (1,744 votes – 61.9%)
"Thank you very much for trusting in me and giving me the opportunity to do a good job for you. I will do the best that I can to make sure we continue our trend upward, getting out of our deficit, and improving for our membership."
