The Latest on the Budget Campaign

California Budget

May 14, 2008

On May 14, the Governor unveiled his revised budget and proposed deeper cuts, a power grab, and more borrowing, not real solutions. In other words, he missed an opportunity to fix our chronic budget problems. Now, legislators must take responsibility.

Take Back the Economy

Close Loophole

The economy is in trouble and everyone knows it. But not a lot of folks know about the biggest and richest corporate players involved: private equity firms. Due to a loophole in the law, these "Buyout Barons" often pay a lower tax rate than ordinary Americans. We're sending a petition to key members of Congress, asking them to close tax loopholes for the "Buyout Barons." It's the first step in a global campaign to take back the economy.

Our Kids’ Schools, Our Families’ Healthcare, and Our Communities Are Worth Paying For

California Budget

With a $16 billion dollar deficit, our state budget is far worse than in previous years. After years of Band-Aids and borrowing, the time has come to make the tough decisions. We can either cut schools, healthcare, care for the elderly & disabled, and other services we care about, or increase funding to pay for them. The Governor has proposed a budget that relies on cuts alone.

What Is the CNA's Track Record?

Recent CNA (California Nurse Association) Activity

Scuttling health care reform in California:
SEIU nurses fought for health care reform in California that would have brought insurance to millions of uninsured children and their families, ensuring our public health system didn’t continue to bear brunt of caring for uninsured by insuring 70 percent of Californians without health insurance.
CNA’s opposition to the legislation contributed to no health care reform at all. Because of the lack of health care reform in California, nine people die every day.

Preventing 8,000 health care workers in Ohio from forming their union: Nearly 8,000 nurses and other healthcare workers in Ohio saw their dreams of forming a union derailed last month after CNA ran a fiercely anti-union campaign urging them to vote “no” in their elections at nine hospitals.

CNA officials have disrupted hospital workers' unionization votes or undermined nurses' sensitive contract negotiations in at least seven states.
