Santa Cruz County Political Endorsements

SEIU Local 521 Endorsements - June 3rd Election
EXERCISE YOUR RIGHT TO ENGAGE IN THE ELECTORAL PROCESS!
As many members found out during our contract campaign last year, who we vote for as City Council members matters!
But why?
• Because we expect our elected officials to address not only our needs in the community, but our needs in the workplace
• Because we expect our elected officials to listen to our issues, investigate the matters, and use their authority with administrators whenever it is needed
• Because we expect our elected officials to always act with integrity and uphold the provisions of our contract, but also local, state, federal laws, and City policies and ordinances

This is a tall order for those who plan to throw their hat into the political ring this fall. Our union will be conducting candidate forums, asking the tough questions and making endorsement decisions based on the individual’s commitment to us.

Information will be forthcoming and we expect you to participate, activate, mobilize, and energize yourselves and others in electing four Councilmembers who will have power to shape your contract in the year 2010!

Election Day was Tuesday, June 3rd, and as always, our members were engaged in many get-out-the-vote activities in support of the issues and the candidates who are not afraid to speak out on behalf of working people and their families. In this political season, we are proud to announce that our members were involved in selecting candidates, phoning voters to support them, and walking precincts with literature to educate the general public.

The following candidates and issues in local races were supported by SEIU 521 Members and WON!

  • John Leopold – Board of Supervisors – District 1, received enough votes to participate in the November 2008 election runoff
  • Bill Monning – 27th California Assembly District
  • Mark Stone – Board of Supervisors – District 5
  • Santa Cruz County Measure R – Protect County Library Services
  • No on Proposition 98 – Stop unjust taking of private property; protect mobile home residents
  • Yes on Proposition 99 – Homeowners Protection Act
