Franz Criego Wins Seat on Fresno County Retirement Board!


Our candidate for the Fresno County Employees Retirement Association, Franz Criego, soundly defeated nine other candidates to win a seat on the retirement board. With Criego's win, SEIU 521 members have effectively clinched the three elected positions on the board. The other two seats are currently held by SEIU members James Hackett and Eulalio "Larry" Gomez.

Voters Reject False Solutions

By overwhelming margins, California voters rejected the false solutions on the Special Election ballot, sending the Governor and Legislature back to the drawing board. Prop 1A, which would have traded temporary revenue for deep cuts into the future, was defeated.

A Boost for Cupertino Schools
Who likes taxes? The good working SEIU families of Cupertino Union School District do, and they spoke with their ballots. Measure B, to allow the district to authorize an annual $125 education parcel tax for six years, was approved by 70% of the voters in the special May 5 election.

Obama Blocks Harmful Cuts to Homecare Workers

In a victory for struggling homecare workers, the Obama Administration has ruled that California's proposed cuts to the In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS) program violate the terms of the federal stimulus aid going to the state.

SEIU 521 Members Help Pass Measure A. Santa Clara County voters overwhelmingly said "YES" to earthquake safety for Valley Medical Center, passing Measure A with a solid 77.9 percent this November Election.

SEIU Wins Major Victories, Defeating Prop. 98

Vote No On 98

In the June primary election, SEIU helped defeat the dangerous and deceptive Prop. 98, which would have gutted rent control and environmental laws and made it nearly impossible to build public works, by a 61% (No) - 39% (Yes) margin. We also helped pass real homeowner protection, Prop. 99, in a 62.5% (Yes) - 37.5% (No) vote.

SEIU Members Lobby at State Capital

SEIU Members Visit Capital for Quality Health Care.
Thousands of SEIU and community members from throughout California visited the State capital this year to help push through a health care bill that will aid working families. Thanks to their efforts and broad-based community support, the health bill (AB 8) was passed by the California Senate and Assembly last month. If it becomes law, it will extend health coverage to 3.4 million working people who do not have health insurance.

Passage of AB 1164

Bill improves parents' access to affordable, quality child care.
On September 11, 2007, the legislature passed a bill to give 90,000 child care providers a voice to improve their profession by passing AB 1164. The bill is on the governor's desk and parents, providers and small business owners are urging Gov. Schwarzenegger to sign it.
