San Jose, CA – Just in the nick of time, SEIU blocked wage cuts to San Mateo County homecare workers.
San Mateo County planned to cut the wages of 2,800 in-home support services workers by $1 per hour after the state announced it would pay less of its share.
Citing a violation of contact, SEIU filed a grievance against the county on June 19 and a lawsuit against Gov. Schwarzenegger and other parties to stop the cuts.
A federal judge on Friday issued a preliminary injunction preventing the state from cutting homecare wages. Following suit, San Mateo County announced yesterday it will maintain homecare wages at the current $11.50 an hour.

"This is a victory for the thousands families that rely on critical homecare services," said Ed Burns, a homecare provider and Chair of the San Mateo County homecare chapter. "It's a shame that we have to jump through so many legal hoops to keep a program that greatly benefits the state and the county."
