Members Kick Off Food Drive to Help Laid Off Workers

New Chapter Created for Newly Laid Off 521'ers
An unprecedented number of Local 521 members risk losing their jobs before the summer is over; in all, more than 1,000.
Come September, many more schools workers could find their positions deleted.
Besides being a devastating blow to the individual members and their families, this is a huge loss for Local 521 because we stand to lose some of our best Union leaders.
Not wanting to let that happen, our Local 521 Executive Board has unanimously approved the formation of a new Chapter: The Laid-Off Workers Chapter.
SEIU L521 members who are laid off can stay in the SEIU family and join the new Chapter for only $2 a month.
With board approval to use up to $100,000 from the local union strike fund to start the program, members will get:
- Training on how to apply for new jobs
- Use of Union office computers for job searches and access to e-mail
- Continued personal insurance with the Union
- Job leads within Local 521 or any other SEIU local
- Special web page on www.seiu521.org to exchange information
- 6-months dues paid
- Staff assistance and coordination
"I support this concept of a 'Laid Off' Chapter. It is so important to keep in contact with our members during this budget crisis. We can keep our members involved in SEIU activities, as well as use their expertise. It is important that our members never feel they are forgotten."
– Rachel Grocha Welch, Forensic Chemist (Santa Clara Valley Medical Center)
