Vernon Ray Tote worked for the Fresno Unified School District (FUSD) from June 1966 until he retired in March 1990, nearly a quarter century later. A light equipment operator, Vernon joined the union as soon as he began working for FUSD and remained a union member in good standing until his death. Vernon volunteered for various positions with the union and was a passionate labor activist.
Vernon was an aircraft mechanic in the Air Force for three years; much of that time he was stationed in Japan. He loved to watch war movies, especially WWII John Wayne flicks. His favorite channel was the True Channel; his favorite food was spaghetti with sausage and marinara sauce and fried Italian peppers.
In addition to happily toiling in his garden, Vernon was a professional pyrotechnic operator. He coordinated and managed big Fourth of July fireworks shows. In particular, he worked the Bass Lake Raft Show and the Kingsburg Fourth of July celebrations. The latter he did for 25 years only retiring in 2002.
