Extra Help Workers Win Union Recognition
Kern County Administration has recognized that the majority of Kern County extra help workers want to join SEIU Local 521. After a routine 30-day posting, extra help units will be certified and can begin bargaining for a contract with County Administration.
"This is the largest victory for public sector workers in the Central Valley since we organized home care workers nearly 10 years ago," says Velvet Hazard, organizing director for SEIU Local 521.
Extra help workers will add up to 1,100 new workers to Local 521. Contract surveys will go out to extra help workers beginning July 25 to find out what contract issues are most important to the workers.
