PALO ALTO, CA – As BART workers move closer to a strike, labor unrest is building up in Palo Alto as well.
About 200 Palo Alto city workers will demonstrate before the city council meeting today, fed up with city management stonewalling at the bargaining table and threatening draconian cuts to workers’ compensation.
Even though the economy is forecasted to improve, management expects workers to bear the brunt of a perceived structural deficit by accepting permanent cuts to hard-earned wages, retirement and health benefits.
Workers are willing to do their part to maintain services. Unfortunately management is unwilling to meet halfway. Today, workers will deliver the message to management that permanent cuts are not a solution. There are other options available to balance the budget and continue to provide quality public services.
