Fulfill Your College Goals
College goals can be expensive. SEIU Local 521, APALA and Union Plus award yearly college scholarship opportunities that enable members and their children to pursue their educational goals at colleges, universities, labor study programs and technical schools.
Union Plus Scholarships
Applications are available starting in mid-June 2017, and a complete application must be received on or before 12:00 p.m. (Eastern Time) on January 31, 2018. Applications received after this deadline will not be considered.
Current and retired members of unions participating in any Union Plus program, their spouses and their dependent children (as defined by IRS regulations) are eligible. Grandchildren are not eligible unless a legal dependent (as defined by IRS regulations). At least one year of continuous union membership by the applicant, applicant’s spouse or parent (if applicant is a dependent). The one year membership minimum must be satisfied by May 31, 2018.
The applicant must be accepted into a U.S. accredited college or university, community college or technical or trade school at the time the award is issued. This is a competitive scholarship. Applicants are evaluated according to academic ability, social awareness, financial need and appreciation of labor. A GPA of 3.0 or higher is recommended. The required essays can account for up to half your total score. Scholarship applicants are judged by a committee of impartial post-secondary educators
Scholarship Award Amounts: Amounts range from $500 to $4,000. These one-time cash awards are for study beginning in the Fall of 2018. Students may re-apply each year.

SEIU Local 521 Scholarship
Membership must be for three continuous years as of September 1, 2017. Graduate students are not eligible. All scholarships must be for the academic year(s) awarded. Scholarships will be granted without regard to the sex, race, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, age, or disability of any applicant. Officers and employees of the International Union and their children are not eligible. Scholarships are limited to one per household.
Clarence Dodge Scholarship
This scholarship is named after Legacy SEIU Local 715’s first president, Clarence Dodge, and provides 10 winners with $1,500 each for their first year of study.

APALA and unions help working families fulfill their dreams. These scholarships will help assist SEIU 521/APALA members and/or their children in pursuing their educational goals. APALA is hoping that the winners of the scholarships will be involved in the labor movement and partake in some classes in the labor study programs that the colleges have to offer.
