Delano Celebrates Cesar Chavez Day

Hundreds of Delano workers and residents, and visitors from around the state celebrated the legacy left behind by the late workers' rights activist Cesar Chavez. The event was the brainchild of City of Delano SEIU Local 521 members, who won the Cesar Chavez Day holiday in their most recent contract that was ratified in 2007. Chavez, the co-founder of the United Farm Workers, began his work on behalf of farm workers in the town of Delano in the 1960s.

SEIU Local 521 members traveled from Bakersfield, Fresno, Salinas, San Jose and other areas around the state to help celebrate the anniversary of Chavez's birth. Chavez died 15 years ago, but his organization, the United Farm Workers, continues to fight for farm worker rights around the world.
