SEIU Welcomes Workers United
At its founding convention this weekend, Workers United—a new union of workers in the garment, textile, laundry, distribution, food service and hospitality industries—
voted to affiliate with SEIU.
Last night, the IEB approved the affiliation and welcomed the 150,000 new members of Workers United into SEIU.
The predecessor unions of Workers United have a nearly 100-year proud history of exposing sweatshops in the garment industry, rallying an entire nation to demand improved conditions and safety for workers, and transforming the commercial laundry industry throughout North American cities, including anti-union strongholds in the South and Southwest. Like SEIU, Workers United, has a mission of fighting to protect some of the most exploited workers in our nation doing some of the most difficult, demanding and dangerous jobs. They share our tradition of organizing low-wage workers and workers once shunned by other unions. Both unions fought for women, people of color, immigrants and others new to the labor force; both share a commitment to protecting immigrant workers from exploitation and promoting the rights and dignity of all workers.
Going forward, SEIU and Workers United will use our common purpose, passion and vision to turn hundreds of thousands of low-wage jobs into the good, family-sustaining, middle class jobs that will help bring about economic justice for workers throughout Canada, the US and Puerto Rico.
