Santa Clara County Workers to Rally for Patient Care

Tuesday, May 13, 2008

SAN JOSE, CA – Faced with another year of daunting budget cuts, the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors hopes to Band-Aid a $172 million budget deficit by slashing community health care, mental health services and medical care at the county hospital.

At least 80 positions are in jeopardy of being eliminated in Community Health Services and the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center alone. The proposed cuts will impact a wide range of patients, from newly born babies with life-threatening needs to patients with head injuries arriving in the hospital emergency room.

More than half of the patients seeking emergency psychiatric help will be turned away. To provide the stories and faces behind the numbers, dozens of county employee-members of Service Employees International Union, Local 521 will be in line to address the supervisors at a budget workshop Tuesday, May 13 at 6:30 p.m.

The Board of Supervisors will meet at 6:30 p.m.
