The California Association of Real Estate Appraisers/SEIU 521 is dedicated to advocating for appraisers in all aspects of their practice. We offer a wide variety of services, including several OREA approved continuing and basic education courses and an improved version of our online STatewide Appraisal Referral System (STARS).

Mission Statement

The California Association of Real Estate Appraisers is dedicated to assisting appraisers in all aspects of their practice. We are committed to advocating for the working appraiser for better fees, appraiser independence, combating lender pressure and coersion, restraint-of-trade issues, discriminatory hiring practices and representation to your national, state and local political officials.

C.A.R.E.A. is now part of the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 521 in joining the country’s largest labor organization which represents 1.8 million members. SEIU is a member of the Change to Win Federation and the Canadian Labor Council (CTW, CLC) which represents over 6.4 million members; including, but not limited to, the International Brotherhood of Teamsters, Hotel Employees Restaurant Employees, United Brotherhood of Carpenters, United Food and Commercial Workers, Laborers’ International Union of North America and others. There are over 600,000 SEIU members in California working as homecare workers, nurses, medical assistants, janitors, psychologists, physicians, real estate appraisers and professionals of all type (public and private).

SEIU is the fastest-growing union in North America, and its membership is among the most diverse in the labor movement. Focused on uniting working professionals to improve their lives and services they provide, SEIU members are committed to making sure all work is valued and rewarded.

Q: Are you a school?
A: Although we are not an appraisal school, we do offer a variety of OREA approved courses.

Q: How do I file a complaint about a mortgage originator?
A: Contact the Department of Real Estate (www.dre.ca.gov), the Department of Corporations (www.corp.ca.gov) or the Department of Financial Institutions (www.dfi.ca.gov) for a complaint form.

Q: How can I verify that my appraiser is licensed?
A: Contact the Office of Real Estate Appraisers. You can do an online search at www.orea.ca.gov or www.asc.gov.

Q: How can I find an appraiser in my area?
A: A list of our members will soon be available online. To immediately locate an appraiser in your area, visit the OREA appraiser search site.
