On Tax Day, April 17, millions of hard working families filed their taxes to pay their fair share. What most people don’t know is that it is more likely than not we are paying higher tax rates than most millionaires and big corporations.
The reason: An unfair tax system that burdens hard working people over the affluent.
Outraged and fed up, union members joined community members on Tax Day, April 17, on the streets of Downtown San Jose to demand a fair tax system, where the 1% and wealthy corporations start to pay their fair share.
Region 1 Vice President, Muriel Frederick, addressed the crowd of local residents to much applause:

“We call on our elected leaders to represent the 99% and make the 1% pay their fair share. Congress should work to close tax loopholes that let corporations pay lower taxes than working people.
Now is the time to say enough is enough!
We are tired of seeing families lose their homes!
We are tired of seeing funding for education slashed!
We are tired of losing our most vital community services!
We need to stop attacking workers and we need to build up retirement security for all.”
One of the greatest offenders of corporate tax welfare is Bank of America who paid zero taxes last year and in fact received over a billion dollars in tax credits, while foreclosing on thousands of homes.
“Not only did Bank of America not pay their fair share in taxes, but they received a bail out of $700 billion of our tax dollars,” said Muriel Frederick in her speech.
Polling question:
Is it right that a millionaire pays a lower tax rate than you?
What can you do:
- If you want to help our fight for a fair tax system, please sign the Governor Brown Millionaire’s tax initiative, and gather signatures.
- If you are interested in helping throughout the year, please join the SEIU 521 Occupy Committee by calling the union office.
