Statement of Purpose

The Social & Economic Justice Committee is charged with developing and implementing the Social & Economic Justice Agenda for Local 521. Founded in 1982 by Chairperson Ray Baeza, the committee discusses and analyzes current social, economic, political, and cultural trends in the U.S. and internationally from a historical perspective. We examine their impact on society, especially on working people, oppressed communities, and women, and make recommendations to our union for positive action to be taken. We encourage and engage in educational programs for our members and community at large on a variety of social, political, and rights issues. Our hope is to promote and integrate conscious living into our everyday lives, walking with love in our hearts for self, family, and all life; walking gently upon Mother Earth, consuming with conscience in non-exploitive ways, and in support of these necessary struggles for human rights and dignity locally, nationally and globally. As Mahatma Gandhi once said, “… We must live the world that we want…”
