SCCOE: Car Caravan

We’ve won a promise of more training for the health and safety of our school staff, students, and the community, but we won’t really know until January if the training is sufficient. We still have the following issues that have not been yet resolved by management:
- Working from home for office staff whenever possible. Office staff should spend as little time as possible at the office for mail pickups, checks, etc., only when absolutely needed, and management should rotate the staff in the office so that there are less chances of COVID-19 infections. Managers are able to work from home and office workers should be able to do the same during the pandemic so that they don’t take unnecessary risks.
- When schools re-open in January, allow school staff with someone at home with health conditions or school-aged children, to be able to work from home. Some staff will be needed in-person, but with less than 1/3 students coming back to school, less staff will be needed; otherwise, school staff is taking unnecessary risks.
- Change in schedule for our 24 custodians. Management would like to substantially change their schedule from day shift to night shift for half of the staff so they can clean classrooms and school sites after students and school staff are no longer present. This the lowest-paid group of employees at COE, therefore almost all of them have two jobs to be able to survive in the Bay Area. If their schedule changes, they may not be able to keep their second jobs. How will they survive in the Bay Area, one of the most expensive area? We are asking for a case-by-case basis to accommodate custodians’ second jobs.
